The attorneys of Murphy & Shaffer represent clients in all state and federal courts in Maryland and the District of Columbia in civil and criminal matters. Although the firm’s attorneys have litigation experience in a broad range of areas], the practice is focused on complex legal matters that often raise novel questions and require creative solutions. The firm includes experienced and efficient litigators who are known for diligent and thoughtful case preparation and unflagging commitment to their clients’ interests.
Over the past 20 years, firm lawyers have represented many types of clients, from individuals to large corporations, all of whom seek and receive personal and efficient representation in complex civil and criminal matters. The firm’s business clients have entrusted us with the defense of several class action lawsuits, thousands of products liability and toxic tort claims, wrongful death cases, and numerous cases arising from multi-million dollar commercial and real estate transactions. The firm has represented regional and national law firms in matters ranging from claims of legal malpractice to investigations by the Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission arising out of the collapse of Enron.
The firm also has undertaken an array of pro bono matters, from the prosecution of civil rights cases to the defense of a minority set aside program at a major local university. Since 2005, three of the firm’s lawyers have provided pro bono representation for an individual detained at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. In 2007, Murphy & Shaffer shared in a national award issued by the National Legal Aid & Defenders Association in recognition of its work in that matter.
Murphy & Shaffer typically does not publicize the results obtained for specific clients, except on the rare occasion when a client seeks such publicity. A sample of the types of cases the firm has handled is available in the list of publicly-available decisions. References are available on request.
